Abstract

On September 20, 1980, under the name of Multidisciplinary Teaching Unit for Open Education (UDMEA), a new academic entity was established within Universidad Veracruzana (UV), which is now celebrating its 45th anniversary since its founding and currently bears the name General Directorate of the Open Education System (DGSEA).

This university entity emerged as an innovative mechanism designed to address the need to expand higher education services, targeting sectors of the Veracruz population facing various obstacles related to employment, family life, or geographic distance that hinder access to traditional schooling systems.

At that time, the strategic vision of the then UV Rector, Lic. Roberto Bravo Garzón enabled the formal establishment of UDMEA, with a presence across the five regions of the University and an organizational structure designed to ensure both academic quality and administrative efficiency.

Since its inception, the Open Education System (SEA) has been characterized by its flexible, multidisciplinary, and semi-presential Saturday model, primarily aimed at working-class individuals and those seeking a second option to study another profession. This approach has expanded access to Higher Education (HE) in our state and consolidated the SEA as Universidad Veracruzana’s largest academic entity.
